Ataturk Dam is Turkey's ambitious development project on the river Euphrates.  This southeast Asian river flows about 2,735 km (1,700 mi) from central Turkey through Syria and into Iraq, where it joins  Tigris River to form the Shatt al Arab river whose waters were a major source of irrigation for the flourishing civilizations of ancient Mesopotamia.   map Turkey
