Some views from southwest Turkey
Bodrum, a town of white houses situated over a hill overlooking a spectacular dazzling blue bay signified by the presence of a great medieval castle built by the Knights of Rhodes. The city also houses one of the seven wonders of the world, the Mausoleum of Mauseleous (377-352 B.C.). Today, it is one of the most cosmopolitan and sophisticated holiday resort in Turkey.
The Castle's origins go back to the Knights of St. John, a group of expatriates who drew their ranks from Europe. This "Order of the Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem" began in the Eleventh Century with a church and hospital set up for pilgrims in Jerusalem. The hospital operated under the strict code that care be denied to no one, although those who did not belong to the Catholic faith were confined to a separate ward.
Bodrum, with its imposing Crusader Castle and Underwater Archeology museum and the surrounding Islands, is a very attractive resort on the Bodrum Peninsula.
